Organic Cotton, a sustainable and comfortable choice

Organic Cotton, a sustainable and comfortable choice

Sustainability is at the forefront of Possenia’s collections. It is at the core of all our actions and decisions.

In some of our garments (streetwear collection, and accessories), we have chosen to work with organic cotton, a more sustainable and versatile fibre. Widely known by name, what exactly is organic cotton and what makes it sustainable?

Firstly, what is organic cotton?

Organic cotton is a natural, eco-friendly and biodegradable fibre. It is cultivated using methods and materials that have a minimal environmental impact, and most importantly, it is grown without the use of chemical fertilisers, synthetic pesticides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

How is organic cotton made sustainably?

The sustainability of organic cotton stems from a dedication to natural agricultural and production practices aimed at reducing environmental harm. Organic cotton farmers prioritise maintaining fertile and healthy soil without overusing it. They achieve this by resorting to organic fertilisers when necessary and, more importantly, by adopting crop rotation techniques that preserve the soil's natural nutrients. To combat weeds and pests, organic cotton farmers employ eco-friendly methods like planting trap crops and introducing beneficial insects, steering clear of chemical herbicides and pesticides. Furthermore, the harvesting process itself relies on natural methods that do not rely on chemical interventions.

When organic cotton gets processed, farmers use a “double-plying*” method or cornstarch to stabilise warp fibres, which are subsequently processed into yarn.

*the double-plying method: two yarns are twisted together to make a single thick threat which is then woven into the fabric)

What are the environmental benefits of organic cotton?

Choosing organic cotton over conventional cotton offers numerous environmental advantages:

  • Reduced Chemical Use

As mentioned above, organic cotton is grown and harvested without the use of chemicals, reducing considerably the environmental impact of growing the fibre. The soil remains naturally healthier, water remains clean, and the environment safer for both the farmers, communities and wildlife.

  • Water Efficiency

The cultivation of cotton is well-known for it’s water-intensive use, often causing scarcity is the region where it grows. Organic cotton relies mainly on rainfall water, requiring less irrigation and fresh water. It encourages the use of water conservation techniques for more than just the cotton crop.

  • Soil Health and biodiversity

When growing organic cotton, it is very important to prioritise the health of the soil. For that, farmers will rotate crops to allow time for them to self-regenerate and avoid stripping the natural nutrients present. The absence of pesticides also prevents soil degradation, ensuring the land remains fertile, and allowing microorganisms to thrive.

  • Healthy Communities

By removing the use of chemicals, farmers and their communities are exposed to a safer and healthier environment, notably in the uncontaminated water.

  • GMO free

Organic cotton is grown from non-genetically modified (GMO) seeds, preserving genetic diversity and preventing potential ecological harm from GMO farming.

  • Durability and comfort

Organic cotton also offers superior quality. Known for its softness, organic cotton is also durable, breathable and naturally absorbent, making it a great choice for long-lasting pieces.

Opting for organic cotton is a pivotal step toward embracing sustainable fashion. When you choose clothing made from organic cotton, you actively support the commitment to sustainability and contribute to a more environmentally conscious future. Your purchase becomes a meaningful part of the movement towards a sustainable and eco-friendly fashion industry.
